.223 Remington

This project is based on a Ruger Model B-1, originally in  257 Roberts, now re-barreled with a Pacnor 1/14" twist, number 7 profile barrel to .223 Rem. The trigger has been replaced with an after market model and the scope is a Leupold Vari III 6.5-20 x 50.

The .223 is intended for varmints out to 300 or 400 yards. I have used  this rifle on a few hunts for wood chucks and prairie dogs with good results. I will also use it for the occasional fox, rabbit and crow.

Load development has shown the best results with 50gn bullets. Both Horady Vmax and Sierra Blitzking bullets have been performing very well. Load development has included a range of powders, but the best velocity and accuracy results has come with Benchmark powder which is now my standard for this cartridge. I have also had good accuracy from American Eagle 50gn ammo and Blackhills 50gn Vmax ammo.

This 100 yard, five shot group was shot with American Eagle ammo in light winds. Not bad for cheep factory ammo.

This 100 yard 5 shot group was shot with 50gn Blitzking handloads using Benchmark powder.
