Our hunting destination for this trip was a "cattle station" about 700 kilometers from Cairns, Northern Queensland. This was a basic trip, sleeping in swags, living out of a Toyota 4WD. My friend Bob and myself spent one week in the best pig country we've ever seen. We both had chances at MONSTER boars, and both stuffed the shot! |
This is Bob with the first boar of the trip. It was taken at 250 yards with a Weatherby 30-378, loaded with a Barnes XBT 180gn bullet. Rifle is shown with a Lightforce scope, but it now wares a Leopold Vari III 8.5-25x50. We believe this may be the first kill to a Weatherby 30-378 in Australia.
There were pigs aplenty on this property. The most productive time of the day was morning, though pigs could be found at all times of the day if you were prepared to take it slow. Rifle is a Remington 700 BDL in 300 Win Mag, now re-barreled to 338 Win Mag. |
I put this guy in mainly because I like the picture. He was my second pig of the trip. He just happened to stop at the wrong time, and fell victim to a lucky shot. Not that I am complaining! Ok Ok, I admit the pig wasn’t
sitting on the ant hill, we posed him there for the photo.
This small boar represents my longest shot on big game. We measured the shot with a Garmin GPS, across a LARGE swamp. From shooting position to pig was exactly 350 yards. The pig was facing directly towards me on the shot, and was hit in the "V" where the top of the ribs meet the throat. Right where I was expecting! Rifle used in this shot is a 338 Win. |
