This trip to South Africa was my honeymoon. I spent 10 days on safari, taking the opportunity to hunt some of the species local to the area such as black wildebeest, springbok and nyala. |
I was not actually
after hartebeest this trip, but this one was so good I couldn’t pass up
the opportunity.
The only trophy my wife wanted was a zebra. This one is now a nice floor rug. |
Impala are the
only African animal I have hunted more than once. They are common, but
I do enjoy them as a trophy.
Blesbok are fairly
localized, being found in southern Africa. They are now pretty common on
South African "plains game" hunts.
|
The area were we
hunted springbok, the Free State, seemed like the photos I have seen of
the American plains country. I kept expecting to see pronghorn walk by
any time.
|
If this guy (the
wildebeest) looks wet, he is! He ran straight into the river after being
shot. The good thing about Africa is that the game scouts get to wade into
the river to attach the rope, so I never even got my feet wet.
|
This guy is the
only animal that my guide Johan was worried by. As we approached after
the shot, he told me "if it tries to get up, shoot it again!".
|
This nyala was the most difficult animal on the trip. We hunted nyala for 3 days and had pretty much given up when a game scout spotted this one about a kilometer back behind us. Luck was with us this time, we were able to back track and found it 60 yards ahead of us. I took it on the last afternoon of the last day of the hunt. As the species goes its no monster, but it was a very satisfying hunt. |
